Jargon Busting…What is a demarcation point?

by | Aug 15, 2017 | Telecom Jargon

In telephony terms, the demarcation point is where the public telecom services (telephone, cable, fiber, etc) connects with the customer’s on-premise wiring. In most situations, it is the dividing line which determines who is responsible for installation and maintenance of wiring and equipment; the customer/subscriber, or telephone company/provider.

Demarcation ClosetThe Demarcation point is usually in a separate room or closet from the customer’s office space or server/network room to limit the telecom service technician traffic to these areas. At the very least it should be in a locked, limited access location.

It is commonly abbreviated as demarc, DMARC. Some sort of network device, such as a router, switch or patch panel, often serves as the demarcation point.
