Satellite Internet: High-Speed Connectivity Without Limits

by | Jun 23, 2023 | Backup Internet, Business Continuity, Internet Access, Satellite Internet

During a recent conversation, I caught up with my long-time friend Jon, whom I’ve known since childhood. Jon is the proud owner of a meticulously restored 1956 Airstream RV, which he keeps parked in the scenic North Georgia Mountains near Dahlonega, GA—where he and his wife call home. It’s worth noting that Jon has a playful habit of reminding me that his preferred spelling of his name is the correct way to spell “John.” Today we discuss embracing satellite internet for high speed connectivity wherever you go.

Jon’s Home Away From Home

As anyone who spends time camping can attest, cell service and internet access can be a challenge. It used to be that checking out is kind of the goal of camping. Now, staying connected is a necessity for most people. It’s not relaxing if they can’t. Many campgrounds have made an effort to provide some sort of internet but it is generally limited bandwidth with too many people trying to use it.

Campers have taken to bringing their own internet access devices. Some hope that their cell phone can get a good enough signal to be used as a hotspot to get internet access. Cell coverage has gotten pretty good across most of the country but can be too weak in some rural and remote parts to support internet usage. There are cell phone signal boosters that add a bar or two to your cell signal but they need a signal to start with and are limited by how strong of a signal they have to start with.

The Starlink Antenna

In order to be effective working from the campground, Jon needed something better. He learned that Elon Musk’s Starlink service was available for his location, saw the good reviews and signed up. After I quit teasing him about not asking me for help in finding high speed internet for his remote camp site, we got to talking about how much the service and equipment costs, the various options and packages available especially for the traveling RV crowd. As long as there is open access to the sky, Starlink is an excellent solution for people that need good internet at temporary locations. After all, this is what I do for businesses of all shapes and sizes.

Although Starlink is getting most of the press, the old pizza box sized Satellite Internet dishes mounted on a roof are still out there. For most of us, our only experience with satellite service is expensive inflight internet and if you are like me, you weren’t impressed. In the past few years though, the competition for satellite subscribers has brought down prices while offering better features. Many satellite internet providers now have unlimited plans so you are not “throttled” down to a slower speed once you reach your usage threshold. Compared to a plane tracking a satellite at 600mph, a land based business location results in much better internet experience. It’s becoming a viable alternative especially for areas not serviced by reliable high speed internet.  Check out this video on how to set up the Starlink Services.

Another use of satellite internet is as a backup in case your main internet service goes out. It is often used as part as an SD WAN solution. Satellite internet is worth looking into.
